The Beauty of the City of Marrakech

Marrakech is located within the Kingdom of Morroco. It is it’s fourth-largest and one of the busiest and most important cities in the territory. When looking around the city, your eyes will be adorned with picturesque scenery of Morrocan architecture that is filled with years and years of rich history.

In this article, we are going to take a closer look at the history of the city of Marrakech.

The Founding

In 1602, Youssef IbnTachfin, who was the Almoravid dynasty, founded Marrakech. In its humble beginning of being a mobile camp, Marrackech has developed to be a religious, cultural, and commercial center throughout Morroco. This is credited to the rise of madrasas and mosques in the area. At one point, this city became the capital of the kingdom, and at that same time, the plantation of Palmeraie began.

The Fall of Marrakech

In 1224, the death of Yusuf II caused instability in the kingdom of Morroco. They lost control of Marrackech as it was conquered by several colonizers in an attempt to power trip the royal family. The City of Fez later replaced it as the capital of the kingdom.

The Rise of Marrackech

After a few Centuries, Marrackech was able to redeem its former glory with the help of the Hintata Emirs. It slowly started blossoming again, and thanks to the bounties of the previous conquer of Saadian Sultans, the city was able to build several luxurious palace and monuments that are still standing even to this day.

Present Day

In between the 1960s and 1970, Marrackech was thriving as a tourist destination after the declaration of independence of Morroco in 1956. This transitional era birth to the new image for the city. Marrakech is now also known as “hippie mecca,” as it attracted several well-known Hollywood celebrities such as The Rolling Stone, The Beatles, and Yves Saint Laurent. This marked the influx of tourists from around the world who found the history, culture, and architecture of Marrackech interesting.

Marrakech is a history of triumph and defeat. Their victories made the city and its people take pride in what they have overcome and the identity that resulted in that struggle while their loss made them stronger and resilient. All of these are visible in the streets as you walk around the city. No wonder many celebrities fell in love with this city as not only does it have an enchanting atmosphere but a beautiful and vibrant culture as well.
